Eye Exams in Staten Island NY

Eye exam checks your eyesight and also involves a series of tests that measure how well you see, as well as the overall health of your eyes. At Eyes on Amboy, we offer professional eye examinations to ensure your eyes are healthy and you can see clearly.

What to Expect If You Have Your Eye Exam

Our comprehensive eye exam has a few essential components that will give you complete care:

  • Visual Acuity & Refraction: We test your visual acuity with a standard eye chart to determine how well you can see at varying distances. It will inform us if you need corrective glasses. You'll read down through lines of letters (like those on a Snellen chart) to the smallest line you can see, and then we refine your prescription with a lens test.
  • Eye Muscle Function: We check the functioning of your eye muscles and the coordination of your eyes (alignment and tracking). This binocular vision test helps determine whether there is an imbalance in eye muscles or a coordination issue.
  • Pupil Dilation & Retinal Exam: We dilate (widen) your pupils with drops so we can adequately examine the inside structures of your eye, including the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels. A retinal exam enables us to diagnose diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment.
  • Tonometry (Eye Pressure) Testing: We measure the pressure in your eyes to screen for glaucoma. Early detection of high eye pressure will prevent more damage and loss of vision from glaucoma.
  • Dry Eye & Ocular Health Testing: We examine your tear film and the surface of your eyes to check for dry eye syndrome or other outside surface irregularities. This allows us to treat or potentially prescribe drops to lubricate, if indicated.

To check your visual acuity, your doctor may use a Snellen chart (above). The optometrist will have you read the line of letters that is smallest you can. If, for example, you struggle to read small letters, we'll know to correct your glasses or contacts accordingly. This simple test is a crucial component in determining an accurate prescription.

Advanced Technology & Specialized Services

Eyes on Amboy uses the latest diagnostic technology to give you the most accurate vision of your eye health:

  • Digital Retinal Imaging: We take a digital photo of the back of your eye with a high-tech camera. This painless imaging technique captures a high-definition image of your retina and optic nerve. We can identify changes over time in these pictures and detect the disease earlier. We can use retinal imaging to find diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other diseases before they cause symptoms.
  • Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) Lenses: We provide individually designed hard contact lenses that are worn overnight for comfortable vision correction. These individualized Ortho-K lenses reshape your cornea while you sleep so that you can see normally the following day without glasses or daytime contact lenses. Ortho-K is a highly effective method for preventing the progression of nearsightedness in both children and adults.
  • Contact Lens Fittings: Our physicians fit all brands of contact lenses – soft daily disposables, torics for astigmatism, multifocals, and specialty lenses. Once your exam is complete, we make sure your contact prescription is comfortable and accurate.
  • Designer Frames Selection: Once your test is complete, browse our extensive collection of designer eyeglass frames. We carry top-selling designer brands, including Bvlgari, Cartier, Fendi, Gucci, Chloe, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Hugo Boss, Michael Kors, and Silhouette. You can try on designer frames and have one-on-one guidance on the best fit and style for your new prescription.
  • Dry Eye Management: For individuals with dry, irritated eyes, we provide expert diagnosis and treatment for dry eye conditions. We can check your tear production and eyelid health and recommend therapies (like prescription drops or warm compresses) to increase comfort.
